Making Math Fun For Kids with Jaliyla Fraser

Making Math Fun For Kids with Jaliyla Fraser

This episode of the Dr. B Show features Jaliyla Fraser, CEO and Founder of Fraser’s Mathematics Solutions. Jaliyla talks about her life as a former Supervisor of Mathematics in the East Orange School District in New Jersey, where she wrote the curriculum and ensured that teachers had the necessary resources to perform their duties. However, out of love for working directly with children, Jaliyla decided to establish her current company to, in her words, “create pipelines of students that aren't afraid of math.”

Jaliyla details the different strategies that they are using to make math fun for kids, and why it’s crucial to also be working with parents at home. She also goes into how they navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and why going back to the pre-pandemic setup is yet another challenge that she is eager to resolve.

QUOTES

Jaliyla: "Because of my mathematical abilities, I see problems as something to get through. And so for COVID, it was, alright, how do we become nimble? What do we do to ensure that the company still lasts?"

Jaliyla: "We literally try our best to make things hands-on, but bringing the math in the forefront so that they can see the benefit and why it's important. Because we always want to answer the question why it's important. We always want to answer the question with students like 'why do I need this anyway?' that's what they always ask."

Jaliyla: "It starts at home with parents and making sure that their child knows that they're in this together, that they can be very successful in math if they continue to persevere."
